Summer Interns on Board at Beacon

June 2, 2008

Beacon Technologies is excited to provide a season of learning and hands-on experience to two summer interns. Tracy Dirks, director of software development, brings the interns up to speed on workplace pace and productivity.

As a varsity cross-country runner, Jeremy Wang is no stranger to going the distance. Having just graduated from Guilford College with his BS in Computer Information Systems, he didn't look at summer 2008 as a final vacation before the daily grind of graduate school in the fall. Instead, he's logging the sunny days at Beacon working with Dirks on the software development team. The Jamestown native first got turned on to working with computers by observing tech professionals like his dad and uncle, and now he hopes to add to his own skill set. "There are a lot of really interesting and useful technologies that I'm being exposed to that are at the leading edge of Web and application programming," Wang says. "I imagine I will have plenty of opportunities to use them in the future."

Returning intern Tyler Loftin doesn't use his age as an excuse to spend his summer goofing off. A recent graduate of the Early College at Guilford, Loftin is spending his third summer bunking in at Beacon, having been only a rising high-school junior when he began getting hands-on training. His projects have grown along with him, from his start making changes to existing Web sites. "I have done work in almost every area," Loftin says. "This summer, I am working on a much more substantial project, building an internal admin system. This requires work in every area of web design and will probably take at least a month to finish." Loftin plans to head to Georgia Tech this fall, taking his practical skills with him. "Much of what I know about Web sites and Web development, I learned on the job at Beacon," he says. "Whatever it is that I decide to do after college, I think that my experience here will come in handy."

Dirks doesn't throw interns in with a sink-or-swim attitude. Although she treats them like fellow professionals, making sure they get their hands on well-defined, real-world development tasks, she also makes sure interns get any coaching or encouragement they may need. "They experience being part of a software development team, they learn about following standard development methodologies, and they increase their knowledge of Web technologies by working with a senior Web developer who serves as their mentor."
