Beacon Blasts Back into Baseball
Local Tech Firm Sponsors Greensboro Grasshoppers for 3rd Year
GREENSBORO, NC — Greensboro-based high-tech firm Beacon Technologies has renewed its partnership with the single-A baseball Greensboro Grasshoppers, meaning once again this season, fans will celebrate a "Beacon Blast" each time a Hopper homer leaves the park. As Grasshopper faithful know, a Beacon Blast is celebrated with a picture on the JumboTron and signature fireworks display, bathing NewBridge Bank Park in light and sound as the ball player is circling the bases.
Beacon Technologies, the official technology partner of the Grasshoppers, is having a blast as it celebrates its third year with the Hoppers. Beacon led a sharp new redesign of the Grasshoppers' Web site (http://www.gsohoppers.com) – and like any great athlete knows, it's important to keep the fans happy.
Today, the Grasshoppers' site boasts the sorts of perks true baseball fans want. In addition to a new home page full of information, fans can consult an interactive seat map to determine what their view of the action will look like. And the Fan Poll on the front page serves double duty, letting fans weigh-in their opinions and promoting upcoming events and team facts.
Beacon President Mark Dirks and Vice President John Scaramuzzo, who lent their love of baseball to the web venture, don't just sit on the sidelines. In fact, Beacon runs its own retail venture to test and prove its systems and software. The guys chose to create the Sports Nut Shop (http://www.SportsNutShop.com) to use as a business, giving them the chance to send new services out for "training camp" before sending them out to their "starting lineup" of client services. It also means that anyone playing on the Beacon softball team has first dibs on the absolute best sports merchandise and memorabilia.
As Beacon deepened its connection with the Greensboro Grasshoppers from being "strictly business" to "take-me-out-to-the-ballgame" serious, Beacon employees seldom have to wait for the sports page the day after a game to know how many Grasshoppers hit home runs. Season tickets have always been shared out among the staff, but the new 2008 season brings one quick improvement. "We upgraded our seats to a grandstand box this year," Dirks says. He and Scaramuzzo plan to create a "Beacon Blast" of its own in 2008, its 10th anniversary year, as it introduces its integrated way of approaching the web to a statewide audience.
