Beacon Teams with Lockheed Martin IT
Beacon Technologies formally announces that it will team with Lockheed Martin Information Technology (“LMIT”) on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ITS-ESE Contract.
In August of 2002, Beacon’s President, Mark Dirks, entered into discussions with many of the large companies that planned to bid on the contract. Ultimately, Beacon opted to join the LMIT Team as one of a handful of small businesses chosen by Lockheed Martin to provide specialized services that bolstered its bid to replace the incumbent. After 18 months, the EPA awarded the contract to the LMIT team in January of this year. However, an extended transition period followed, which ultimately delayed a full startup until now. The LMIT Team celebrated at its official “Win Party” last Thursday night in Baltimore, MD. “After putting in over 2 years of effort, it was great to finally get together and recognize this major accomplishment as a team”, said Dirks. “Of course, this is a huge win for Beacon and opens up a tremendous number of opportunities, not only within the EPA, but also as a small business vendor to LMIT.”
The EPA is requiring systems engineering support to assist in meeting its strategic objectives and responsibilities under Federal legislation and executive orders. Lockheed Martin will specifically use Beacon’s expertise in User Interface Design, ADA/508 Compliance, and Usability Engineering to provide an innovative, more cost-effective approach in streamlining the front-end development to EPA applications. In addition, Beacon will provide analysis, development, and maintenance services (“ADM”), primarily for web-based application development.
Beacon participated throughout the RFP process with Lockheed Martin through most of 2003, specifically providing input in the aforementioned areas, reviewing relative sections of the RFP response, and working with LMIT's quote team to develop the “winning” bid. “We spent a couple of years as a subcontractor to Accenture working on the Department of Education’s IT Modernization effort. In doing so, we contributed significantly to the FAFSA development and the redesign of the ED.GOV site. That experience, particularly with meeting 508 compliance guidelines and our depth of expertise in user interface design and web-based development, certainly made Beacon an attractive addition to Lockheed Martin’s project team,” says Dirks.
