2013 – Another Good Year For Beacon

Déjà vu?  Each year I like to take some time to look back at what we accomplished.  There were just too many projects, events and milestones in 2013 to capture everything in one blog post, but here are the highlights.  The hard work of the entire Beacon Team, individually and collectively, produced quite an impressive year… again!



Our work with colleges and universities continued to grow through projects with Georgia Tech, Harvard, University of Hartford, Lees McRae College, Southern Illinois University, Syracuse University, Texas A&M, Jacksonville State University, University of Alaska SE, Trident Technical College, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and our largest project, with the University of the Virgin Islands.  The volume and quality of our web solutions for colleges and universities over the last 10 years have made Beacon a leader in higher education website design and development.  Thank you to all of our higher education customers!



In addition to our Higher Education clients, we are fortunate to work on projects with local businesses like NewBridge Bank, Hanes Brands, DH Griffin, Ryan Scott Displays, G-Force Marketing, Quaintance-Weaver, Town of Midway, ITW Texwipe, Vecoplan, Matthews Specialty Vehicles, PhoneTree, Bell Partners… and many more.   Thank you to all of our local customers!

Outside the Triad, we were excited to start new projects and relationships with companies like Basin Electric & Power (ND), Holyoke Gas & Electric (CT), Total Wine & More (MD), Caribbean Green Technology (USVI), the Jason Motte Foundation (MO), Vardi Company (NY), Emory Healthcare (GA), Dale Electronics Corp (NY), Delta Apparel (GA), Palmetto Moon (SC), Bassett Furniture HGTV (VA) and 20+ Bassett Licensee locations across the country.  …and thank you to all of our customers across the U.S. and beyond!

partnersBeacon remained strong with its partnerships in 2013 too, making sure that our clients have the best-in-class vendors and the best web solution for their budgets.  Some of these key partners are Hannon Hill Cascade Server CMS (8 years), Nextopia (Site Search), Aspdotnetstorefront (ecommerce software), IfByPhone (dynamic phone tracking), Bronto Software (Email Management Software), 4Tell (Product Recommendation software) and of course, Google Analytics (our 7th year as a Certified Partner).  We continued to partner with the Greensboro Chamber and rejoined the Greensboro Merchants Association.  And, we committed even further to the NC Technology Association as I was elected to its Board of Directors.  NCTA is extremely important to Beacon in that it allows us to reach across the state within the technology sector for both networking and informational purposes.  Thank you to all of our fantastic and dependable partners!



In 2013, we added 10 new employees, grew our office space by 33%, doubled our 401(k) corporate match, continued to provide annual pay raises and, with all the healthcare confusion, Beacon continued to pay 100% of healthcare and dental coverage for our employees.  It was our first full year with what I believe is our best ever Sales Team (adding 3 new members) and we officially launched our new Beacon IT Services division.

The Beacon Team also continued to have many fun social events and participate in community activities that I believe are a main staple of Beacon’s culture.  Among these are fundraisers for the United Way, a charity event for Kids Path and volunteer work at the Second Harvest and Food Bank.  Thank you to the incredible team we have at Beacon!


Hard to believe, but we had our first retiree in 2013!  Mr. Wayne Van Zandt played a big part in making Beacon what it is today.  Since the early days, when we had our data center located in a very small 900 sf office, he was there, being a true team player and important part of Beacon’s success. So a big Thank You to Wayne for his dedication and service to Beacon!



On top of all that, it was our best revenue year since 2001.  New business revenue grew by 22% and renewal revenue grew by 170% from customers in 27 states and 3 countries.  It was nice to see that 36% of our 2013 business came from our home state (NC) and nearly 10% from outside the country.  Long-term clients like Bassett Furniture, Burton+Burton, The Princeton Review, Firefly Store Solutions and NJ Resources continue to use Beacon’s services year-in and year-out (some for over a decade now).

From a marketing standpoint, we revamped our website, which is always tough. Our team is just VERY particular because they take great pride in their work and the company – so they strive to make it perfect!  In addition, customer projects always come first, so a lot of the work on our new site happened off hours.  In 2013, we upped our presence at trade shows – attending 8 national, 5 regional and 16 local/NC events, which proved to be very successful in expanding our business and gaining brand recognition.



Yes, 2013 was another good year for Beacon Technologies and I am both thankful and proud for what we, as a team, accomplished.  However, it’s already February and 2014 has our web development, digital marketing and IT services teams very busy.  We look forward to spending our 17th year on new exciting web projects, attending even more national events and continuing to take great care of our growing list of local, national and international clients.
